Rock and Blues 2025: The Phil Ashmore Band Delivers a Masterclass in Blues Rock

If there was one performance at Rock and Blues 2025 that perfectly encapsulated the raw emotion and electrifying energy of modern blues-rock, it was The Phil Ashmore Band at The Black Market Venue on January 24, 2025. Blending soulful blues with rock-driven grit, Phil Ashmore and his bandmates put on a show that left the audience enthralled from the first note to the final encore.

From the moment they launched into their opening track, "Chasing Shadows," it was clear that this was no ordinary blues outfit. Phil Ashmore's rich, resonant vocals carried a weight of experience, pain, and passion, perfectly complementing his impeccable guitar work. Whether delivering searing solos or gentle, soulful licks, Ashmore’s playing was nothing short of masterful, drawing comparisons to the greats while maintaining a distinct style all his own.

Backing Ashmore was a band at the top of their game. Danny Mitchell on bass provided the deep, pulsating grooves that anchored each track, while drummer Chris "The Hammer" Evans delivered a thunderous yet nuanced performance, effortlessly switching between delicate brushwork and hard-hitting beats. The addition of James Connelly on keyboards brought a layer of warmth and depth to the sound, his Hammond-style organ solos weaving beautifully through the set and adding a classic blues feel.

One of the standout moments of the night came during their performance of "Long Road Home," a heartfelt ballad that showcased Ashmore’s emotional depth as a songwriter. The track’s slow build and soaring crescendo had the audience hanging onto every note, with many visibly moved by the sheer sincerity of the performance.

But it wasn't all slow burners—tracks like "Burn It Down" and "Midnight Train" brought an infectious energy to the room, with Ashmore's blistering solos and the band’s tight rhythm section whipping the crowd into a frenzy. These high-octane moments were balanced with soulful, blues-drenched tracks that highlighted the band's versatility and depth.

Phil Ashmore's charismatic stage presence and effortless connection with the audience made the night feel personal and intimate, despite the packed venue. Whether sharing stories behind the songs or engaging in playful banter, he created an atmosphere that felt like an old-school blues jam session, steeped in authenticity and camaraderie.
